Adrenal glands are no bigger than a walnut and weigh less than a grape. They sit like a tiny ‘pyramid’ on top of each kidney. Their location is spelled out in their name; ’ad’ ‘renal’ means ‘over’ or ‘above’ the ‘kidney’.

Important ‘control centers’ for many of the body’s hormones These powerful endocrine glands manufacture and secrete steroid hormones including coritsol, DHEA, estrogen, and testosterone, as well as adrenaline all of which are essential to ones health, vitality, and overall well-being.

The adrenal hormones support and affect every tissue, organ, and gland in your body. Their main purpose is to enable one’s body and mind to deal with various forms of stress including injury, disease, and adaptability to situations. The adrenals (largely) determine the energy response of your body to every change in one’s internal and external environment, in fact, every cell in your body responds to signals from the adrenals.

One of the essential functions of your adrenal glands is to draw all your body’s resources into “fight or flight” mode by increasing the production of adrenaline and various other hormones. I would like to re-name this response “fight, flight, or freedom”. When the adrenals are healthy one’s ability to respond to situations appropriately is enhanced. This renewed freedom allows for a whole host of possibilities.

When healthy, your adrenals can instantly increase your heart rate and blood pressure, release energy stores for immediate use, sharpen your senses, slow digestion and various other secondary functions. This function is extremely important in emergency situations.

Another aspect of healthy adrenals is the ability to endure long periods of physical exertion such as seen in marathon running, swimming, long distance cycling, and the day to day responsibilities of parenting. When supported by healthy adrenals, one’s natural energy supply is balanced. It is your adrenal gland’s ‘job’ to react to stress in a ‘balanced’ way so that one’s response is appropriate to the situation and not injurious. An example of this is the ‘protective’ activity of anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant adrenal hormones such as cortisol that helps to minimize allergic and negative reactions such as inflammation and swelling to environmental allergens, infection, and various foods.

The hormones produced by the adrenal glands closely affect the utilization of carbohydrates and fats, the conversion of fats and proteins into energy, as well as the distribution of stored adipose (fatty tissue) on the body (especially around the waist), blood sugar regulation, and healthy cardiovascular and gastrointestinal (digestive and absorptive) function.

Adrenal gland hormones have a wide variety of physical, emotional, psychological, and physiological effects including sex drive and the tendency to gain weight. In fact, at mid-life (menopause in women), the adrenal glands become the primary source for sex hormones circulating throughout the body in both genders. (reword the last two paragraphs)

An estimated 75-80% of Westerners suffer from ‘Adrenal fatigue’ at some point in their lives. ‘Adrenal fatigue’ is a described as a collection of signs and symptoms classically known as a “syndrome” that results when the adrenal glands function below the necessary level. Signs and symptoms may include severe fatigue, light-headedness upon standing, depression and irritability, lack of sex drive, exhaustion and general malaise, loss of appetite, food cravings, and dark circles around the eyes. Most commonly associated with intense or prolonged stress, various other situations contribute to ‘adrenal fatigue’ including life crisis, trauma, lifestyle, and chronic illness. Other factors that contribute to the depletion of adrenal health include certain lifestyle choices such as improper diet, substance abuse, too little or improper sleep or rest and increased or on-going life-style pressures.

Following are some natural suggestions for nourishing and rejuvenating adrenal health:

Adequate intake of water. I use the formula .6 x body weight = ounces of water per day for my clients. This is a number that should be moved towards over time. For example if weigh 150 pounds your daily water intake would be 90 ounces. .6 x 150 = 90 ounces. If you are currently drinking 40 ounces of water per day and your (ideal) daily ounce intake is 90 ounces, increase gently to your ideal ounces of water over the next month or two.

Silence. Take 10 minutes of time to sit in silence at both the beginning and the end of each day. Find a quiet place in your home or outside near a tree or natural source of water. Sit in a comfortable position and gently follow the rhythm of your breath. Allow yourself this sacred quiet time each day as an opportunity to nourish and assimilate, ground and rejuvenate your energy.

Decrease (or preferably eliminate) intake of processed sugars and increase intake of natural earth sugars from root vegetables such as yams, carrots, turnips, and beets.

Ingest adequate amounts of essential fatty acids. Various sources include fish oils, evening primrose oil, borage oil, hemp oils, coconut oil, and flax oils. Research which sources are best for your needs.

Adequate fresh air, deep breaths, and movement. Spend time in nature-walking along the ocean, at a park, on a well traveled trail. Take full deep breaths and inhale in the healing power of the natural world. Take time to look at the trees and flower as well as the sky and various birds and so on. Enjoy this time outside as healing and nourishing.

Take time for baths using Epsom salts or apple cider vinegar (a tablespoon of either is sufficient). This will help to pull out fatigue and ‘acidity’ from the your mind and body. Light a candle and read a book or simply soak in the warm water imaging your worries and stress washing away as you renew, strengthen, and ‘purify’ your energy. Consider adding a few drops of pure Lavender essential oil to your bath and allow the relaxing aroma to help you relax and refresh. A favorite essential oil blend: 4 drops Lavender essential oil, 1 drop Rose essential oil. Lavender essential oil is often used for the decreasing stress and depression. Lavender has a calming and mood lifting effect.

Deep sleep. The two hours before midnight is consider essential time for sleep for rejuvenating sleep. Start consciously moving your bedtime towards the bewitching hour of 10 pm and notice the shift in health. A couple of drops of Lavender essential oil on your pillow can help with sleep.

The following essential oil blend used directly over the adrenals first thing in the morning and then again in the (early) evening can help to nourish, strengthen, and rejuvenate the adrenals.

In a 30 ml (one ounce blue cobalt or amber glass bottle)
Black Spruce 2 ml
1 ml Pine essential oil
1 ml Cedarwood essential oil
1 ounce of Hazelnut carrier oil (unless allergic to nuts-then choose another carrier such as sesame seed).

Fill the remainder of the bottle with carrier oil and blend.

Use 1 ml at a time and rub into the adrenal area at the bottom of your ribs on your back.

*** As with any suggestions please consult your primary care giver prior to utilizing if you have any questions or concerns.

A fantastic and mysterious relationship occurs between plants and their environment. The plants bodies absorb and alchemically transform the soil, water, sunlight, moonlight, and air. The bodies of the plants convert the elements of the Universe into elegant art forms, foods, medicines, and fragrances. The plants create their aromatic fragrance from the nutrients of the soil and its symbiotic relationship with its environment. The rhythm of the celestial heavens is cultivated by the plant as it develops under the radiant sun, the luminous moon and the sparkling stars. The natural flow of rain, underground rivers and streams, as well as mountainous snowmelt brings the living water into the plant. The winds and breezes blow the air and ether around the plant as she continues to refine her beauty and gifts. Aromatic plants and flowers are arguably some of nature’s most incredible creations. The earth’s garden of plants and flowers is glorious and vast containing highly effective medicines for every nature of physical and non-physical ailment.

In humans, the olfactory (sense of smell) region is an area of about 2 and a half square centimeters and is located in each of the two nasal cavities between and below the eyes. Containing approximately fifty million primary sensory receptor cells, this region is highly intricate. Incredibly, the olfactory sense is 10,000 times more perceptive than the sense of taste and is able to distinguish a nearly infinite number of element compounds at very low concentrations. When compared to sight, we find that olfaction is more complex. In order to span the visible spectrum humans’ use only three types of photoreceptors; in contrast, the sense of smell relies on hundreds of distinct classes of receptors.

Depression is one of the most common reasons for using complementary and alternative therapies. There is a wide and varied range of psychological, physical, and energetic issues and challenges that can lead to feelings of depression and feelings of negativity.

Research has shown that fragrances stimulate multiple areas and a variety of systems in the brain including those that influence the endocrine system, the immune system, and the limbic system (the emotional body). Essential oils have a direct and profound effect on the deepest levels of the body, emotions, and psyche. Through inhalation as their primary route of absorption, essential oils have a strong and immediate influence on the mucous membranes of the respiratory system. Passing through the capillary beds of the sinuses and activating the olfactory nerves, the fragrances of the oils enter the brain, producing powerful systemic effects on the neurological, immunological, and hormonal functions. A Korean study on the effect of aromatherapy on pain and depression in patients with arthritis found that receiving massage with lavender, marjoram, eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint oils significantly decreased both the pain and the depression levels.

In both Naturopathy and Ayurvedic Medicine (The Science of Life), essential oils are considered to enhance the flow of prana (essential life force), enhance and nourish ojas (nourishing and immunological essence), and brighten tejas (clarity and mental luminosity). In Traditional Chinese Medicine, essential oils in general are medicines for the Shen, the spiritual essence that resides in the heart and guides and governs consciousness. Used consciously, essential oils powerfully enhance positive mental and emotional states.

Following are some oils that have a reputation for up-lifting Shen, enhancing prana, nourishing ojas, and brightening tejas (luminosity):

Bergamot has a wide reputation for a capacity to gently uplift. This is a direct result of its action of smoothing the flow of Liver-Qi. Bergamot combines the ability to both relax the nerves and refresh the Spirit; it is suitable for depressive states that depression. Neroli, like Sweet Orange and Bergamot regulates the Qi and like Jasmine oil, comforts the Mind and Heart.

Neroli is called for at a core level, for the type of depression that comes from nervous and emotional exhaustion. Neroli uplifts the Mind and Spirit with its potential to nourish and unify. Neroli assists in retrieving and releasing repressed emotions. Neroli is specifically indicated for individuals who, in order to escape from emotional pain and suffering cut themselves off from their feelings and senses.

The Chamomiles (German and Roman) are wonderful oils to use when the depression manifests in a moody and irritable and dissatisfied outward expression that is associated with stagnant Liver-Qi.

When depression is of a Fire nature it most often involves an imbalance of Joy and Love-the root emotions of the heart and the Mind. Joy is an extension of Shen’s innate sense of harmony and perfection, an experience of emotional and spiritual well-being. The depression that afflicts the Heart and Shen involves a loss of one’s natural sense of Joy. There is often an accompanied lack of enthusiasm and interest as well as an inability to become inspired.

Wonderful recipes to release depression and uplift the Spirit:

Wise Woman skin care: using essential oils for natural healing.

Wise women will notice that therapeutic grade pure essential oils are often found in the highest quality beauty care products designed for mature skin. It is known that essential oils have many beneficial and therapeutic properties including the stimulation of cellular metabolism, the regeneration of tissues, reduction of oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory effects, as well as various hormone-like activity. These known benefits are the therapeutic fundamentals for wise woman topical support of the health and beauty of aging skin. Not only are these natural (nature made) essential oils good for the skin, they are much kinder to the planet than synthetic concoctions made in a laboratory and the results of using pure therapeutic grade essential oils on one’s skin can certainly be as profound. Beyond these obvious benefits, the wise woman (that’s you) can make a skin care blend that is precisely suited to her skin’s personal needs and at a fraction of the cost of the high-end synthetic blends. Many of the ingredients that are required are available locally at your health food store. The more exotic items found either on the internet or through mail order from providers of therapeutic-grade aromatherapy and apothecary supplies. As a curious woman you may ask, “What makes essential oils and their complementary carrier oils so effective for natural skin care?” The answer is found in nature herself. It happens that their elemental structures of the plant oils are beautifully and decidedly compatible with that of our skin. The truth is, essential oils are easily absorbed through the various layers of the skin and even through the skin’s individual cell walls. This compatibility makes them extremely simple to create and use your own formulas.

A little background on some of the various carrier oils otherwise known as “base” oils. These oils make up the foundation of most natural skin care formulas and are pressed from nut and seeds. There are a many lovely carrier oils from which to choose: Following are some of our favorites for nourishing and healing mature skin: Avocado is known to be both hydrating, and nutritive; it has a medium consistency and is generally included at about 20% of the total base oil mixture. Apricot Kernel is fantastic for dry skin and is used for healing damaged or irritated skin. Apricot oil can be used in combination or with other carriers or as 100% of the base oil. Borage oil is used as a small (5-15%) portion of the carrier blend; helps to calm inflammation and supplies important essential fatty acid nutrients to the skin. Borage and Evening Primrose oil may be interchanged though the Evening Primrose should be used in slightly larger concentrations of up to 25% of the base formula. Hazelnut is likely the most common carrier in skin care blends. It has a thin consistency and is best used by those with oily skin conditions. With its astringent properties Hazelnut should not exacerbate troubled skin. Lastly, and likely most importantly we have Rosehip Seed. Rosehip seed oil combines a plethora of therapeutic properties including the ability to turn over skin cells without the drying side effects found in pharmaceutical preparations such as Retin-A. A good base oil for mature skin would look something like 70% Apricot Kernel, 15% Rosehip and 15% Evening Primrose. For those with dry skin, add Avocado oil at 20% and reduce the Apricot Kernel to 50%. For oily skin, use Hazelnut in place of Apricot Kernel.

And now for the delightful ingredients, the essential oils. There are numerous essential oils that can be used in skin care and many of these will are of great benefit to mature skin. We will look at eight incredible essential oils that are all beneficial to mature skin:

Considered one of the most potent revitalizing oils for the derma (skin), Carrot Seed (Daucus carota) essential oil is distilled from the seeds of Wild Carrot. Carrot seed is chosen principally as a tonic for skin that has become dull and lifeless which makes it a good choice for a blend for those whose lifestyle or environment seems to be taking its toll on the skin’s vibrancy. Carrot seed has a smooth, warm and earthy aroma that will blend well with many other essential oils. Another essential oil that is great for revitalizing the skin is Rosemary Verbenone. Rosemary Verbenone contains a higher amount of regenerative ketones than common rosemary and is highly effective at regeneration of the skin. In his book ‘Advanced Aromatherapy’ , leading medical aromatherapist and Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, Rosemary Verbenone “displays its main activity in the dermis (the middle layer of the skin), where it stimulates the metabolic functions, circulation, and elimination of waste products”.

The essential oil of Clary Sage is renowned as being particularly suited to natural skin and beauty care. Clary Sage contains sclareol, which mimics the effects of estrogen; this is noted by one expert author and aromatherapist suggests that this effect is the a key reason it helps with skin aging. Clary Sage is also celebrated for its ability to regulate the skin’s secretions naturally bringing balance to both over-oily as well as over-oily skin. Elsewhere, it is noted as relaxing and ‘mildly euphoric’ which may also contribute to its positive effects for wrinkles.

Sweet Fennel is another ‘estrogenic’ essential oil, called for by Herbalist and author Valerie Worwood in “The Complete Book of Essential Oils” as an ingredient in wrinkle-preventative blends for all ages.

Sea Buckthorn Berry CO2 (a cold-processed essential oil made from the berries of the prolific Sea buckthorn tree) is gentle oil with a pleasingly sweet aroma. Sea Buckthorn contains significant amounts of essential fatty acids along with antioxidant vitamins A, C and E. This specialty skin care essential oil is rich in carotenes, which likely impart its rejuvenative effects. It is noted as a particularly effective anti-wrinkle and skin softening agent. Also known as Rock Rose, Cistus is another specialty essential oil for the care of mature care. The oil is distilled from a plant that grows in hot, sun-drenched regions of the world such as Spain and Morocco. Cistus is called for in blends for its naturally firming effects on the skin. Along with its firming effects, Cistus is also a natural astringent making it a good oil for those with adult acne. Please note that Cistus is mentioned as a good choice for blends that are used for firming around the eyes. A word of caution, when using ANY essential oils near the eyes, the blend should contain no more than .5% essential oils as to not be irritating in this sensitive area.

No discussion of aromatherapy and skin care would be comprehensive without first addressing Lavender essential oil. Well-known for its relaxing effects, true lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) can be included in aromatherapy blends for skin made for any age. Lavenders’ support for stress reduction may quickly result in improving the overall appearance of your skin. Due to its regenerative actions, anti-inflammatory, and balancing effects, lavender is especially supportive of aging skin. Lavender may be added in whatever concentration one chooses in alignment with one’s personal taste. For those wanting a stronger anti-inflammatory and regenerative effect, use Helichrysum essential oil. Also known as Immortelle or Everlasting, Helichrysum is known widely as a profoundly healing essential oil for damaged skin and is often called for in blends for healing wounds or reducing the appearance of scars. Note that if you are combining aromatherapy with other treatments such as chemical peels or microdermabasion Helichrysum essential oil would be an valuable ingredient in your blend.

The recipes for natural skin for mature skin are relatively uncomplicated. A good starting place is the following ratio: 10 drops of each essential oil to one ounce of carrier oil. For example, as a if you have four total ounces of carrier oil, you would then use forty drops of each chosen desired essential oil. Remember ladies, more essential oil is rarely better when blending a formula for the skin. Many essential oils work best at low concentrations with some oils potentially irritating the skin at high doses. A good rule of thumb is to keep your overall concentration of essential oils to a 5% total concentration. This ratio works out to about 30 drops per ounce of carrier. Remember that the face and neck are relatively delicate areas and will respond beautifully to small amounts of these naturally dynamic ingredients.

If you are designing your own recipe, you can start with equal amounts of essential oil in your blend. Some oils will have more powerful aromas than others; most of these very potent aromas will be oils that you will want to use in smaller quantities. You can also adjust according to your aromatic preferences as well, thus creating a formula that not only supports your skin’s health and metabolism, but smells lovely too.

Although many of these oils are favored for women’s beauty care, similar recipes may be used by men as well. A more masculine formula can be created using essential oils from woods – Cedarwood and Australian Sandalwood are both good examples of an essential oils that can be used for both its therapeutic and aromatic properties. Both Frankincense and Myrrh essential oils both have warm earthy aromas and are also noted for their positive effects on aging skin. The addition of essential oils purely for their aromatic beauty is always an option. Please note, there are a there are a few oils that should not be applied to the face that are commonly used in aromatherapy: Cinnamon, Oregano, Clove and Red Thyme; cold-pressed citrus oils such as tangerine, lemon, and orange as well as Angelica Root oil are phototoxic, and should not be applied to skin that will be exposed to sunlight in the following 72 hours. If you’re not sure about a particular essential oil, check with a reliable resource - There are many excellent references and health professionals available if you need assistance.

Blending a personal formula may seem overwhelming at first, but in fact it is quite a natural and pleasant experience. Once the formula is decided upon, one simply needs to mix each selected essential oil into the one or more base oils (these also have their own healing benefits) at the recommended concentrations, allow to stew and then apply to clean skin on a regular basis. The base oils will carry the essential oils more deeply into the skin, and prevent them from being quickly evaporated into the air. This allows the essential oils time to work their magic.

The creation of synergistic therapeutic blends for mature skin is enjoyable, easy-to-do, and a wise choice for the skin, the planet, and the pocket-book. By using therapeutic-grade oils and carriers, you’ll be creating an effective, beautiful smelling formula that is designed precisely for your own skin condition. Moreover, you can adjust the recipe over time as your needs change, or make different formulas with various aromas to double as natural perfumes. As always with aromatherapy, start slowly, pay attention to your body, enjoy the process!

Evidence shows that the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Japanese, Russians, and Indians all worked on the feet as a tool to encourage good health. Originally known as ‘reflex zone therapy’, Reflexology is a holistic healing method that involves pressure and massage of the reflex points found on the feet and/or the hands. Reflexology teaches that one’s vital energy circulates between the organs of the body, permeating every living cell and tissue. If the energy becomes “blocked”, the part of the body relating to the blockage is affected. These reflexes found on the soles of the feet or the palms of the hands reflect the health of the whole organism. Through stimulation of the circulatory and lymphatic systems, and by encouraging the release of toxins, Reflexology supports the body in healing itself.

A method for “activating the healing powers of the body”, modern Reflexology is both a science and an art. As a science, it requires careful study, practice, technical knowledge, and skill. As a healing art, Reflexology works best when the therapist works with patience, dedication, intention, and (most importantly) loving care.

Reflexology is not a “foot massage”. Reflexology does not diagnose illness. Reflexology does not treat specific diseases. However, when combined with sound healing practices, reflexology can help to facilitate healing.

Many benefits of Reflexology:

Stress Reduction and Relaxation- Reflexology assists in alleviating the effects of stress by inducing deep relaxation. The nervous system is allowed to rest and consequently functions in a more balanced state. As the body moves toward homeostasis, healing can take effect.

Cleanses toxins and impurities from the body- Gravity pulls toxins downward. Inorganic waste material (such as uric acid and calcium crystals) can accumulate in bottom of the feet. An experienced Reflexologist can break up these crystals with various reflexology techniques.

Revitalizes energy- Reflexology works on with subtle energy flows to revitalize the bodies natural internal healing mechanisms.

Balances and integrates the body- as energy pathways are opened, strengthened, and brought into balance, the body returns to its natural rhythms. Energy flows. The body, mind, and spirit are brought back into balance.

Improves circulation- The feet are furthest from the heart (where circulation can tend to be stagnant); Reflexology stimulates and encourages blood flow to the feet thus helping to nourish all the extremities of the body.

Preventative health care- Good health depends on balance, equilibrium, and the natural functioning of all the body systems. This dynamic state of balance is called homeostasis. For the body to function optimally, all systems must work in synergistic harmony.

Nourishes practitioner and client- The Reflexologist is a conduit for healing. As healing takes place, the practitioner and the client both experience a sense of well-being.

Reflexology and Iridology are amazing and dynamic complimentary tools in assisting oneself and one’s client in becoming independently healthy.

In my opinion as having both received and shared reflexology sessions with clients and friends, this method of healing is fantastic!

Beginner’s Guide To Using Aromatherapy With Children
Essential oils are pure aromatic plant essences - they are distilled from flowers, fruit, leaves, resins, roots, seeds, and wood. The are used for their healing properties the world over. We are blessed to have fabulous resources for essential oils here in the United States - but with this comes with some important cautions: Only some of the essential oils available are suitable for children; others are not suitable for children and some are even dangerous to children (children with epilepsy should not come in contact with stimulating essential oils).

When used correctly however, essential oils can be of great benefit, and will not conflict with your child’s medically prescribed drugs. Always research the oil of choice thoroughly before using with your infant or child - ask advice from a qualified practitioner, or see the references at the end of this article.

That said, essential oils can be a wonderful way of supporting your child’s health, happiness and well-being. Essential oils can be very therapeutic and nurturing to both your child and you, the caregiver. Essential oils are used externally (on the outside of the body) in your child’s bath, body lotions, oils, creams, gels, compresses, foot baths, or in a oil warmer. The effects of aromatherapy will generally fall into one of three main categories: 1) Assisting in healing from minor illnesses and accidents, 2) Supporting your child’s overall sense of well-being, and 3) Assisting your child in getting quality rest.

When using essential oils with your child, it is imperative that you find a reputable supplier of high vibration therapeutic-grade essential oils, using organic or wildcrafted varieties when possible. Synthetic copies of oils commonly used in perfumery are not appropriate, and may even be harmful to your child’s health. To maintain efficacy, essential oils should be kept in dark amber or cobalt glass containers, in a dark and cool location, away from the child’s access. Wooden storage boxes from craft or other local stores can make a nice container for the bottles.

Methods of Using Essential Oils:
There are two methods of using essential oils with your child - INHALATION: through a diffuser, nebulizer, or adding to a humidifier reservoir, and TOPICAL APPLICATION: diluting the essential oil in a carrier oil and applying topically. Adding essential oils to a bath combines the two methods, though we will cover it under topical application.

For topical application, essential oils are diluted in varying strengths depending on the use and age of your child. The concentration can vary from one drop of essential oil per tablespoon of carrier oil, to a couple of drops per teaspoon of carrier added to a drawn bath, to an equal ratio of carrier and essential oil applied directly to your child’s feet (as in the case of gentle Lavender). In other words, there is a huge variation in dilution levels depending on the circumstances. Mamas, do your research and then trust your instinct. Only you and your child baby know exactly what is right for your situation.

General dilution rate guidelines of essential oils in one ounce of carrier oil:
Age of Child and amount of Essential Oil per One Ounce Carrier Oil for Topical/Massage Application:

Newborn (Consult primary care physician before use). 1-3 drops essential oil / ounce 2-6 months 1-3 drops essential oil / ounce 6-12 months 1-4 drops essential oil / ounce 1-4 years (unless very small) 5-8 drops essential oil / ounce 6-7 years 5-10 drops essential oil / ounce 9-12 years 5-12 drops essential oil / ounce 12 years to young adult 10-15 drops essential oil / ounce DO NOT USE AN ESSENTIAL OIL NEAT (undiluted ) on childrens skin, unless indicated to do so for a specific condition. If your child has very sensitive skin, it is important to test a small area before using a new single oil or blend. Keep essential oils away form the eyes. When using citrus oils - orange, bergamot, lemon, tangerine, mandarin, and lime - do not use where the skin will be exposed to sunlight for the next 12 hours. These oils are considered ‘phototoxic’, and can react from the sun’s rays. They may be used in a bath, however, where they will be washed off the skin when the bath is done.

Essential oils are not to be taken orally (by mouth). When your child is taking medications, reduce the amount of essential oil by half the amount recommended for their age group.

Carrier oils for children: Sweet Almond oil is generally regarded as the safest and best overall carrier oil for use with babies and children (Do NOT use if your child has allergies to nuts.) Apricot kernel oil is also considered extremely safe with children over 6 years of age. Jojoba oil can be added at about 10% concentration for any blend - it has a soothing effect on the skin and is good for hair.

Topical Application - Nurturing Touch Massage Recipes. There is nothing better for any child than the loving, nurturing touch of a parent. A gentle hug, a smile, a kiss on the cheek all reassure the child and help the parent and child to bond. These everyday forms of connection are instinctual and children thrive from it. Current research shows that massage can help the health of children both physically and emotionally. In hospitals, studies done with premature baby’s show that touch is an essential aspect of the child’s ability to thrive. Using aromatherapeutic nurturing touch massage can be therapeutic to both the child and the parent. Using a light, conscientious tough you can massage your child’s feet, arms, hands, back, abdomen, and even legs. The massage should always be done with loving intention and the work is done in the direction that the blood flows-from ankles to leg; from wrist to shoulder, etc.

Here are a few suggested blends for this wonderful method - each is in one (1) ounce of Sweet Almond oil: Restful Sleep - 4 drops lavender, 2 drops Roman Chamomile; Happy Child - 3 drops Rose, 1 drop Neroli; Calm and Relaxed - 3 drops Petitgrain, 3 drops Neroli; Emotional Nurturing - 1 drop Rose, 1 drop Vanilla, 2 drops Lavender.

For a Baby oil blend, to be used as a moisturizer OR massage oil (note: the frequent washing of a baby’s skin actually makes it difficult for them to retain vitamin C; application of a quality skin oil will help them keep adequate supplies of this important nutrient). 1 ounce of organic sweet almond oil or hazelnut oil 1 drop of pure Lavender essential oil 1 drop of Vanilla essential oil OR 1 ounce of organic sweet almond oil 2 drops of pure Lavender essential oil 1 drop of pure Chamomile (German) essential oil.

* The above blends can also be added to the bath. One teaspoon with the following amount of essential oils added can be added AFTER the bath is filled, per the age of the child: 3-5 years, 2 drops; 6-8 years, 3 drops; 8-11 years, 5 drops. (Perhaps the easiest way to do this would be to make a full strength blend (without carrier oil) of your choice, then dilute as needed for the application.)

Inhalation of essential oils: For inhalation, one can apply one or two drops to a handkerchief and inhale, or add oils to a water misting bottle or humidifier. Calming essential oils that may be used are Lavender (recommended for sleep - one to three drops can be placed under the pillow), Mandarin, Roman Chamomile, Ho Wood (an ecologically friendly replacement for Rosewood), Tangerine, Petitgrain, Vanilla, and Neroli. Use these oils singly, create your own blend, or use one of the body oil blends above without the carrier oil. A few drops per quart of water in a mister sprayed throughout a room or added humidifier reservoir will do.

For an anti-anxiety blend: Try 5 drops bergamot, 1 drop lavender and 3 drops geranium - dilute to 10 drops per ½ pint of water for a room spray or use in a humidifier, or dilute to the appropriate level for your child’s age if using topically. For alertness or when your child is studying, try lemon, bergamot, grapefruit or pine, either singly or in a blend that pleases your senses (usually the best way to blend is to trust your nose!)

Essential oils can also be used in a candle lamp or warmer - with the oil gently evaporated from the surface of a small bowl of water by the heat of a candle. An electric nebulizing diffuser is generally not to be recommended for use with children, as the concentration of oils in the air can be too high.

Last but not least, essential oils are wonderful antiseptics. Cuts and scrapes are simply a way of life for the little ones! A great blend for minor wounds is a 1:1 mix of Lavender and Tea Tree oil. Lavender is soothing, anti-inflammatory, and has regenerative ‘ketones’, while the tea tree is a strong antiseptic used for many generations by native Australians and is a must for every first aid kit. Use this blend in the water used for cleaning wounds, and apply a few drops to the gauze of a bandage - do not apply directly to the skin as it will be unnecessarily irritating. On the bandage, however, it will be soothing and accelerate the healing process.

So, this is a very brief overview of using essential oils with children. There are many, many diverse and fabulous applications for essential oils for almost every conceivable minor ailment seen in childhood. The key is knowledge - finding a good practitioner, or reputable resource for your needs. For further reading, books by Valerie Ann Woorwood are excellent: “Aromatherapy for the Healthy Child” and “The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy”; for safety data, see “Essential Oil Safety” by Robert Tisserand and Tony Balacs. The essential oils mentioned within this article are recognized as safe for most individuals - if you or your child are recognized as having a specific illness, and/or are under a doctor’s regular care, please always consult an appropriate practitioner before proceeding. That said, aromatherpy can be a very fun and rewarding endeavor for both you and your child. Essential oils have benefited the lives of many the world over, and have a little bit of plant magic available to everyone.

”The responsibility of knowledge is to share it’ Hollis Littlecreek, Ojibwe elder.

I am writing this as an opportunity to support the dynamic and diverse energies in each of the women in our lives. As women we encompass many different aspects of the goddess. Initially we are daughters and (perhaps) sisters as well. We are apprentice priestesses and maidens as young ladies and we carry these aspects with us even as we grow and learn and age. We may choose to marry and birth children becoming wives and mothers all the while the daughter aspect, the priestess, and the maiden still inform and present themselves in our lives. All women eventually realize that they are sisters to all other beings and a part of the beautiful matrix of life. In the indigenous Cherokee tradition, it is said that we become an adult at 52 years of age. It is a wholistic approach that it provides ways and means for an individual to live their whole life as a dynamic process of spirituality in action.

Some questions to ask of your heart: Where are the places you have lost or given away your power? What beliefs do you hold that deny your power? What helps you to re-connect to your divine self?

Like each woman, each flower holds a powerful, dynamic, and unique potential. The following flower essences may prove helpful in nourishing, healing, deepening, and expanding your connection to your essence:

Alpine Lily: Alpine Lily flower essence stimulates the integration of the feminine and female selves, promoting circulation between the higher and lower energy centers. The soul learns that its full energy and potential depends of the utilization of the bodily female as well as the spiritual feminine from this flower essence.

Positive qualities: For women, acceptance of one’s femininity grounded in a deepened experience of the female body.

Patterns of imbalance: Overly abstract sense of femininity; disembodied, alienation from or rejection of female organs as “lower”.

Doctrine of Signatures: Elegant, strong, and well defined. Throughout history, the Lily has often been connected with the sacred mother energy.

Chakra: corresponds with the second (water element; sensuality and emotions) and seventh chakra (connection to spirit, divine purpose, ancestors).

Alpine Lily flower essence helps the feminine soul experience a more vibrant relationship to the female body. While this remedy can sometimes be indicated for men who are addressing inner feminine aspects of themselves, it is primarily beneficial for women who harbor a psychological split in their relationship to the feminine principle. These women tend to favor that which is more cosmic and virginal, and find it difficult to identify with the earthly aspect of the feminine. They have many spiritual attributes and actively use higher feminine forces, but do not integrate this consciousness with the physical body. Negative impressions of the female body are often unconsciously absorbed from the mother or from the larger culture. Because the soul does not fully identify with or inhabit the female body, physical stress and disharmony can result in the reproductive organs, in the sexual function, or in the biological experience of pregnancy and nursing.

Pomegranate (the fruit of life)This fruit tree is native to Western Asia. The flowers are red, leathery and bisexual. Parts of the plant have been used to treat fevers, lymph challenges, leucorrhea, and throat problems.

Pomegranate has been a symbol of womanhood since earliest times in human history. In ancient Egypt its fruit was regarded as so precious, that they would not have buried a pharaoh without putting this fruit into his grave. Pomegranate was also the fruit that made the discovery of sexuality in the Garden of Eden possible. Reliable evidence can be found in mystic Christian as well as in ancient Muslim sources.

Positive qualities: Warm-hearted feminine creativity, actively productive and nurturing at home or in the world. This remedy is primarily for women. It can be used universally applied for nearly all emotional problems. Pomegranate is considered a ‘love potion’ for women, and if they are having challenges in accepting their femininity, Pomegranate helps them to overcome such insecurities. This essence creates a sense of nurturing or at the very least a recognition of a need for nurturing within the individuals.

Patterns of imbalance: Ambivalent or confused about the focus of feminine creativity, especially between values of career and home, creative and procreative, personal and global.

Doctrine of Signatures: The Pomegranate resembles the womb of a woman. The bright red is the color of the first chakra, the root chakra. The developing plant evolves from a flower and is birthed at the end of a long cycle. Within the fruit are many seeds of possibility.

Chakra: corresponds with the second chakra (water element; womb, creativity, birth, sensuality, sexuality, flow).

Pomegranate is a teacher of your inner wisdom, beauty, and power in even the darkest moments. Pomegranate stirs passion, creative awareness, and expression of feminine energy, nurturing and connecting with Nature. Pomegranate attracts positive, fruitful abundance in all aspects if one’s life. The individual who seeks to evolve through her feminine incarnation is given great possibility and choice in the modern era. Within the feminine soul are great are strong creative forces which may be used for biological mothering and family nurturing. But these same womb forces can also be used in the larger sphere of the “world mother.” Many women feel torn in their allegiance to traditional value of family and home, or service in the larger world. The source of many emotional challenges, insecurities, and attempts at over-compensation or false ‘bravado’ in the personality lies in the ‘lack of love’ experienced as a child.

Those who attempt to balance both possibilities may feel that their energies are drained and compromised, so that neither role provides full, creative satisfaction. This crisis in the feminine soul may come at a particular stage in the life cycle, such as mid-life or menopause. The psychological tension may be so profound that physical illness is created, especially in the sexual organs. Without conscious awareness of this struggle, the soul does not have the power to choose and act freely. In the end many women short-change their ability to fully realize their feminine creative forces because of the inner confusion and turmoil which they feel. Pomegranate promotes conscious alignment with the feminine creative Self, so that a woman can see more clearly her right destiny and choices. Pomegranate flower essence helps the soul to stay connected to the Mother-Spirit-of-Love in all that it gives to the world.

This remedy assists in assimilating vitamin E, iron, and zinc. Iron assimilation is particularly strengthened during menstruation, which gives a woman and more stamina. It opens and stimulates the sexual chakra, the nadis are invigorated. This flower essence naturally accentuates all aspects of a woman’s femininity. Meditation and creative visualization can (and should) be readily be used with this essence.

Hibiscus: a flower that grows from a hearty woody stem becoming ever more refined and ever more delicate. A variety of expressions through color and personality. A beautiful flower that thrives in natural settings and grows abundantly throughout the rainforests of South America.

Positive qualities: Warmth and responsiveness in female sexuality; integration of soul warmth and bodily passion. Passion for life, inspiration, and manifestation of love.

Patterns of imbalance: Inability to connect with one’s female sexuality or sensuality; lack of warmth and vitality, often due to prior exploitation or abuse.

Doctrine of Signatures: The Hibiscus grows out of the earth as a bush with strong stalks that become more and more refined as they head skyward. The flowers are lush and beautiful with a wide variety of powerful amazing colors. This flower naturally depicts the vibrant strong and sweet energy of a woman.

Chakra: corresponds with the first (one’s connection to their root; family or origin, feelings of being steady and grounded) and second chakra (sensualtiy, sexualtiy, creativity, emotional body, water element).

One of the most tragic assaults to the soul dignity of women is the exploitation and commercialization of female sexuality. This deeply wounds the souls of many women so that they no longer feel a warm connection to their sexuality. Often the sexuality is divorced from deeper feelings of love and warmth which come from the heart.

In many cases sexual expression becomes cold and unresponsive, because the Soul can no longer contact this part of the Self and infuse it with love and caring. Hibiscus flower essence helps women to reclaim their sexuality, and to restore these soul forces with vitality and authenticity.

It can aid many women who have been traumatized (sexually and otherwise), and it is also generally beneficial for all modern women who have unconsciously absorbed media images and other stereotypes of dehumanized sexuality.

This remedy is sometimes also indicated for men who need to develop a stronger relationship to feminine warmth and positive sexuality. Hibiscus creates flowing warmth throughout the body and soul, especially healing the sexuality.

Beech: One of the original Bach flowers, Beech is a well-loved favorite for moments of intolerance and patterns of impatience and feelings of being ‘overwhelmed’. Feeling stressed, trapped, unable to speak one’s ‘truth’ in a manner that is helpful.

Positive qualities: Beech relates to the soul qualities of tolerance, acceptance of others’ differences and imperfections, seeing the good within each person and situation.

Patterns of imbalance: Overly critical, judgmental attitudes, intolerance; perfectionist expectations of others; oversensitivity to one’s social and physical environment.

Doctrine of Signatures: Deep roots and a strong trunk with branches that stretch far and wide. The Beech tree resembles the energy of a woman with her ability to root and nurture her immediate family as well as open arms to reach out and help the world.

Chakra: corresponds with the fifth chakra (throat - speaking one’s truth; deep listening; integration of health of thyroid; connection to and utilization of etheric energy.)

The Beech flower essence helps transform the tendency to be critical due to an inner sense of inferiority and hypersensitivity which is projected onto others. Very often such persons grew up in an environment of criticism and harsh expectation, and so they inwardly feel very vulnerable and insecure. However, they learn to cope by condemning others instead of healing themselves. Another characteristic of the Beech flower essence type is hypersensitivity to personal environments, both physical and social. Their permeability to the influences around them leads to intolerance of imperfection in others.

Beech flower essence softens the soul pain such persons feel; as they re-establish connection with their Higher Self, they sense the love an unconditional acceptance that radiates from the spiritual world. Through this warmth of soul, they are able to let go of their harsh and blaming ways, to accept others in the same way that they are accepted by the spiritual world.

Sunflower: This annual herb grows to twelve feet. Its large, golden-yellow or red flowers are composed of small tubular flowers arranged compactly on a flat disk. It originated in Mexico and Peru.

Positive qualities: Balanced sense of individuality, spiritualized ego forces, sun-radiant personality. Sunflower balances the Yin and Yang energies and attunes people to higher wisdom. Those who demonstrate anger or ‘hostility’ towards their father or other males in their life will benefit from Sunflower.

Patterns of imbalance: Distorted sense of Self; inflation or self-effacement, low self-esteem or arrogance; poor relation to father or masculine aspect of Self.

Doctrine of Signatures: The signature of the Sunflower is mostly astrological since the Sunflower looks like the sun and astrologically the sun is associated with the father, the male ego, and spiritual knowledge. As the sun rises in the East it represents our ability to awaken to the light of the soul.

Chakra: corresponds with the third chakra (personal will, purpose in life, solar plexus, digestion and integration of mourishment; discernment - knowing what to keep and what to release.)

Sunflower flower essence: The healthy Self shines forth from the soul, not unlike the sun which radiates in the sky. This benign and wondrous soul quality of radiance at once inspires with its light, and heals with its warmth. All human souls have within them this capacity to shine like the sun, but many are afflicted in their ability to emanate this solar power in a balanced way.

Some people mask their true sun-nature with feelings of self-effacement and low self-esteem. This condition darkens the true luster of the Self; in these instances the Sunflower flower essence brings to the soul the quality of light. Others want their brilliance to shine too strongly, glaring others with pompous self-glory and ego-aggrandizement. For these people, Sunflower flower essence brings out the quality of warmth, or loving compassion. Just as the soul absorbs from the mother the moon-like qualities of receptivity and nurturing, so does the soul learn from the father the sun-like qualities of the shining, expressive Self.

Sunflower flower essence heals disturbances or distortions in the soul’s relationship to the masculine, often associated with a conflicted or deficient relationship with the father in childhood. This healing of the masculine Self is equally important for both men and women. The message of the Sunflower is so universal and foundational that it is beneficial at nearly every stage in the human life cycle. When the soul learns how to harness this great sun force within its Self, it is truly able to bless and heal other human beings and the Earth.

‘Deep within our hearts a fire glows. It spirals out, expanding, filling the body with warmth and a great sense of peace. The body is filled with light. The inner body becomes ever more clear. The seed of most pure mind arises untarnished from the stream of thought. The mind sees many images unfold; many feelings, many thougths float on that stream. The wise human being cultivates those thoughts which are nurturing. Be not attached to the stream of fear, anger, or doubt. Recognize the stream of pure mind.’ - Cherokee Wisdom Elder Dhyani Ywahoo (Voices of our ancestors)

If you assumer that there’s no hope, you guarantee that there will be no hope.
If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, that there are opportunities
to change things there’s a chance you may contribute to making a better world.
That’s you choice.
- Noam Chomsky

‘Hope is not the closing in your eyes to the difficulty, the risk, or the failure. It is a trust that if I fail now - I shall not fail forever; and if I am hurt, I shall be healed. It is a trust that life is good, love is powerful, and the future is full of promise.’ - anonymous

‘Each thought, each action in the sunlight of awareness becomes sacred. In this light, no boundary exists between the sacred and the profane.’ - Thich Nhat Hahn (Peace in every step)

‘Love and compassion are necessitites, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive’ - H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us: it’s in everyone.
As we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates others.

Tao Te Cheng (Verse 10)

While nourishing both mind and body
Can you keep them joined in Unity
While focusing your awareness in the present moment
Can you retain the flexibility of a child
Turning inward to your deep still center
Can you fill it with the purest light
While showing respect and compassion for others can you avoid interfering
As conditions of life expand and then contract again
Can you remain grounded in your stance
Now this clear eyed openness to the ebb and flow
Can it be maintained without straining
Birthing and nourishing
Creating and grasping
Acting without presuming
Guiding without controlling
This is integrity
The profound virtue
